Daily life in Pompeii and Herculanium

Overview:
Dily life in Pompeii and Herculanium was very different from the life we live today. Due to a lack of electricity the day started and ended with the sun.
The forum:
  • Was a market place in the centre of town. People of Pompeii would go here daily forgrading and selling of their goods.
  • It was situated in thecentre of two important routes that linked Pompeii to Naples and Stabiae.
  • It played a fundamental role in the political, economic and religious life.
  • These market places consisted of: clothing shops, take away food and markets.
The baths (thermal):
  • The public baths in Pompeii were essential to the everyday life of the civilians.
  • Bathing was considered very important to the people of ancient Pompeii.
  • There were three main baths in Pompeii: the Stabian baths, the Forum baths and the Central baths.
  • Stabian baths: are the oldest baths of the three. Over the years this bathing facility had been changed over time and consisted of: a sport and exercise field (palaestra), dressing rooms and a series of small bath tubs along thenorth side. From a Birdseyeview it was evident that the baths were split into two sides, one for men and one for women.
  • Forum baths: were the smallest and nicest of the three. Despite being small they contained everything they needed: dressing rooms, hot, tepid and cold rooms, an exercise field and toilets. They also contained separate areas for men and women.
  • Central baths: Were the newest of the three. They were still not completed when Vesuvius erupted. They did not have separate men and women areas.

The basilica:
  • The basilica was located in the south west wing of the forum.
  • It was the main centre of busineas matters.
  • Upon entering greetings were I the lobby which then led off to a four starred staircase leading to the main room within the building.
  • In this main room was an isle surrounded by columns leading to the main tribunal area.
  • In the roof were strategically placed holes to provide light within.
